LowRiskDT
Project
Problems
to be Solved
A
significant technological challenge is the search
for appropriate disposal of hazardous waste and technologies
that are simple, practical and economical for safeguarding
public health and reduction of environmental pollution.
Disposal in abandoned mines is believed to be an
achievable, low-risk and relatively cheap way of
disposal of hazardous waste. The objective of the
proposed project is to investigate the prerequisites
for using this alternative, to outline suitable design
and construction technology and to make a performance
assessment with special respect to environmental
safety and cost, which represent the major problems.
Reference
cases of typical caverns and drifts in crystalline
and metamorphous rock or ore material will be defined
based on a survey of available mines, and possible
waste solidification and isolation techniques using
clay and concrete will be identified. An overall
issue is to carry out assessment of the performance
of the repositories with respect to rock stability
and groundwater permeation as well as to environmental
contamination.
