Determination of anode resistance to ground is typically an integral part of cathodic protection system designs. However, complications in this process arise when anodes are located close together as mutual interference effects become important, often resulting in significant reduction in effective output. Such considerations can apply for anodes on structures, on sleds and between sleds.

Predicting Cumulative Galvanic Corrosion Damage in Aircraft Structures

BEASY presented at the NATO AVT-303 Research Workshop on Corrosion Management Athens, Greece a new approach to predicting corrosion damage using computer simulation models. Not only the corrosion rate can be predicted for complex multi material structures but also the cumulative corrosion damage experienced by the structure during its service life. A demonstration of this new methodology (corrosion Service Life Model) was presented using environmental exposure data collected on board a naval vessel. The effects of crevice and pitting corrosion can also be included in this predictive model. The approach is applicable not only to aircraft but to a wide range of structures subject to atmospheric corrosion.

New Cathodic Protection Paper
Influence of Anode Location and Quantity for the Reduction of Underwater Electric Fields under Cathodic Protection

Electric fields form around a ship due to current flow from cathodic protection (CP) systems, such as impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) and sacrificial anode cathodic protection (SACP) Also, underwater electrical potentials (UEP), which can generate underwater electric signatures, may form even in the absence of CP systems due to galvanic corrosion between the hull (steel) and propeller (nickel aluminum bronze, NAB). A steady current flow around the hull of a ship can create an underwater electric field. Modern underwater mines are attuned to these electric field signatures and use them to detect and classify passing vessels.

Galvanic Corrosion is important as it occurs whenever dissimilar metals or certain types of composites (eg carbon based) are located close to each other.

Fracture Mechanics and Risk Methods Used to Analyze the F-16 WCTB
An interesting paper was presented at the recent Aircraft Structural Integrity Conference held in Jacksonville in November 2017 by Mark Ryan of Lockheed Martin. The presentation describes a study of cracking found in a bulkhead structure. BEASY simulations were used to predict SIFs and crack shape evolution. Models were typically created from existing F-16 ABAQUS finite element models using the BEASY Abaqus Interface.
BEASY Paper Presented at NACE 2017
Early in 2017 at the NACE Corrosion Conference in New Orleans BEASY staff presented some recent developments and applications in the technical sessions and exchange groups. One of the papers with the title "Assessment of Effects of Cavities and Narrow Channels on CP Design in the Marine Environment" discussed the difficulties presented by the geometry of certain structures in obtaining adequate CP protection.

Aircraft Corrosion Research Project
BEASY is working on a project supported by the United States Navy Sea Based Aviation Program and the Air Force to validate and develop computational corrosion modelling tools which can be used to predict the location and severity of corrosion within aircraft structures. The increased use by engineers of corrosion simulation tools during design and maintenance has the aim of improving the durability of an aircraft through better material selection, improved corrosion resistant design, and better predictive maintenance schemes. Improved aircraft durability will ultimately reduce fleet maintenance and life-cycle corrosion costs.

BEASY once again attended the annual NACE Corrosion Conference, which this year was held between March 26-30, 2017 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
We were active in both the conference programme and exhibit hall showing our modelling services and software to support engineers with responsibility for corrosion aspects related to offshore and onshore structures, and also in the wider manufactured sector (aircraft, vehicles, etc).

BEASY were again at EUROCORR this year which was held in Montpellier, France, and we presented a number of papers on subjects including Internal Cathodic Protection of Offshore Sea Water Pump Caissons, Modelling Cathodic Protection/Prevention of Reinforcement in Concrete, and Using Predicted Corrosion Damage to Determine Stress Concentration, Fracture and Crack Growth.
BEASY Attended NACE Corrosion 2016
BEASY attended the NACE Corrosion Conference in Vancouver this March where we were active at the exhibition as well as presenting and participating in the technical sessions and exchange groups.
It was great to meet many friends at the conference and discuss how modelling can be used to improve and optimize CP systems and mitigate interference.
At this year's conference there were a number of papers presented by BEASY staff and customers and BEASY CEO Tim Froome also gave a presentation on modelling of well casings at the Technical Exchange Group meeting.
NEW BEASY 2016 Fatigue & Crack Growth Simulation Software release
BEASY is pleased to announce the release of a new version of the BEASY Fatigue & Crack Growth software. The primary benefits of this new release are that it provides a further enhancement of the software's automatic crack growth capabilities and major improvements in the over simulation times. For typical models, the remeshing time has been reduced by between 40% and 80%.
This release incorporates a significant improvement to the adaptive meshing routines. As a result cracks are inserted into models more quickly, even in areas of complex geometry. The crack surface mesh quality is also improved with a continuous quadrilateral mesh now created along the entire crack front. This further improves the accuracy of the SIF solution and provides greater stability when running fatigue crack growth simulations.
BEASY Attended MARELEC 2015
Dr Andres Peratta presented some recent conceptual work on the application of simulation modelling to predict the corrosion related potentials and electric and magnetic fields on and surrounding naval vessels at the International Conference On Marine Electromagnetics (MARELEC) in Philadelphia, USA. Modelling is used to predict the corrosion related potentials on the vessel itself, and the electric and magnetic fields surrounding the vessel. For naval vessels, modelling can be exploited to not only assess the performance of cathodic protection systems on the vessel (ICCP and sacrificial) but also the corrosion related magnetic fields as they make a significant contribution to the vessel signature.

BEASY staff attended the 2015 AA&S Conference in Baltimore in April and met with many customers to discuss their applications and update them about projects underway at BEASY.
We had a lot of new interest at our booth this year in the areas of fatigue crack growth in residual stress fields, fracture behaviour of composite plates as well as the modelling of corrosion related damage. There was also considerable interest in the BEASY Corrosion Manager software which is used to predict and simulate galvanic corrosion in structures such as aircraft.
Designing an ICCP System for the Hull of an Arctic Ice-Breaking Vessel
An interesting article was published in a recent issue of the NACE Materials Performance magazine.
Researchers used modelling tools to design effective cathodic protection systems that address challenging seawater conditions and coating damage from ice abrasion.
According to researchers Min-Jeong Lee, senior engineer, and Chae-Seon Lim, principal research engineer, both in the Material & Coating Research Department at Samsung Heavy Industries, Co., Ltd, South Korea, the performance of a CP system for a ship's external hull is dependent on several factors, including the geometry of the ship's hull, the resistivity of the surrounding seawater, the chemicals in the seawater, and the degree of coating damage. The ICCP design for many commercial vessels is often based on current density (CD) calculations and the designers' experience rather than an analytical method. For an icebreaker travelling in Arctic conditions, the researchers note, this traditional approach to CP design may not result in an adequate amount of corrosion protection for the hull in this environment.

An article in December 2014's MP magazine looked at the effect of grounding on the cathodic protection (CP) potential distribution at an oil station, which had been studied using BEASY's corrosion and cathodic protection simulation software.

CP Design For Offshore Wind Turbine Foundations
An interesting article was published in the September 2014 issue of the NACE Materials Performance magazine. The article presents design considerations and some of the challenges a corrosion engineer encounters while designing a cathodic protection (CP) system for offshore wind turbine foundations. The authors were Sameer Ayyar, Jacob Jansson and Ruth Sorenson from COWI A/S Copenhagen, Denmark.

CORROSION MODELING SOLUTIONS SHOWCASED AT NACE 2014
BEASY participated in a very busy NACE Corrosion Conference in San Antonio last month. We were active in the conference program and exhibition hall, highlighting corrosion modeling services and software. It was good to see many friends and interested engineers visiting us at our booth. There were a number of papers presented during the Technical Program which featured some engineering projects carried out by the BEASY engineering services team and by customers. Guy Bishop presented a paper entitled "Recent Signature Modelling Studies To Predict The Impact Of Hull Openings And ICCP System Anode Failure" at the recent MARELEC 2013 conference in Hamburg, Germany, July 16th-19th 2013.
The study used computer modelling to assess the robustness and sensitivity of the vessel ICCP system to the impact of anode failures, damage, coating degradation, hull opening and appendages etc. Of particular interest was the corrosion related electric and magnetic signatures. The study used some recent developments contained in the latest release of the BEASY Corrosion Defence modelling software. The results demonstrate how a computational modelling approach is one of the most effective tools for the design of corrosion control systems and optimization of ship electric and magnetic signatures.
Boundary Element Crack Growth Analysis Of A Riveted Fuselage Skin

Sharon Mellings recently presented a paper on some recent developments to improve the modelling of cracks in aircraft structures. Generally aircraft structures are highly complex structures involving complex load paths, however cracks are often localised features involving just a few of the structural components. One particular location for damage is near to riveted connections where localised forces can lead to fatigue damage problems. These areas can be where stiffening ribs are attached to the aircraft skin, where two or more skin sections are overlapped or where holes in the skin are covered by additional doubler panels.
The paper presented a model which can be used to predict the crack growth path and residual strength of the structure. The simulation technology was tested by applying it to a large scale structure consisting of a number of panels stiffened by ribs and stringers. Virtual Testing of the structure was performed to predict the structural failure due to crack growth and the estimated fatigue life of the structure.

Coatings and Corrosion Technical Workshop
